Members from AAO (Les Amis des Oiseaux) has, on Sunday 10 August 2014, proceeded to the ringing of 45 greater flamingo chicks that hatched at the Lagoon of Korba in Tunisia.

This action is the first of its kind in that country.

This year, a small colony of greater flamingos has successfully nested in the Korba lagoon (Governorate of Nabeul) and has been discovered by a nature lover. This colony is made of about 40 young flamingos.

This great event is full of interest as this species is considered as an occasional breeding bird in Tunisia. The last successful reproduction was confirmed by AAO in 2007 at Thyna Salines (Sfax governorate).

The usage, in this operation, of colored plastic rings with unique codes would allow monitoring the flamingo movements thank to the reading of the rings by a wide observers network through the Mediterranean and to databases centralizing all signaled observations. In fact, the same plastic rings have allowed the identification of some of the flamingo that has reproduced in the Korba lagoon this year.

These rings are readable with monoculars and, each year, approximately 25 readings are communicated to the ringing centers.
