Removal campaign of the invasive plant Carpobrotus (Sour Fig) in the future MPA of the Kuriat Islands (Tunisia)

RAC/SPA has participated, on Sunday 20 April 2014, to a removal campaign of the invasive plant Carpobrotus (Sour fig) in the Kuriat Island (Governorate of Monastir), organized by the "Notre Grand Bleu" and the "Association des Fans de La Chebba" associations and supported by the Coastal Protection and Planning Agency (APAL) and RAC/SPA.

Experts participating to this campaign have made presentations on the site's importance for marine turtles nesting, the role of marine habitats in the biodiversity conservation and the progress made in the development of a concerted management plan for the Kuriat Islands future Marine and Coastal Protected Area (MCPA).

Under the guidance of scientists present on the spot, about 60 highly motivated volunteers have manually removed the invasive Carpobrotus plant (Sour fig) recently discovered on the Island, from a more than 200 m² wide area. The grabbed-up plants have been dropped on a tarpaulin to dry in the open air.

Control and monitoring surveys will be planned in order to definitely eradicate this exotic invasive plant from the future MCPA and allow native biodiversity to take over.
