The exact location of the Symposium will be specified at a later stage (in the Second Announcement). Background Information: The Mediterranean Symposium on Marine Vegetation is organised within the framework of the implementation of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean Sea, adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 1999. The First Symposium took place in Ajaccio (France) on 23-24 October 2000; the Second in Athens (Greece) on 12-13 December 2003 and the Third in Marseilles (France) on 27-29 March 2007. During the three previous sessions, the number of participants kept on rising to reach 120 participants (from 17 Mediterranean countries) during the Third Symposium. Objective: The main objective of the Symposium is to take stock of available knowledge on Mediterranean marine vegetation. It is also intended to provide an opportunity for exchange among Mediterranean scientists. The 4th Symposium (2010) is therefore expected to gather marine vegetation specialists from all over the Mediterranean region to discuss current knowledge of the state of Mediterranean plant species and assemblages and to present aspects of their latest research. Main Topics: The Symposium will be dealing with the main following topics: Mediterranean marine vegetation: population, biology, ecology and dynamics (including inventory of species) Mapping and monitoring of Mediterranean marine vegetation (and associated organisms) Impacts and disturbance on Mediterranean assemblages (including global changes) Conservation, management and restoration of marine vegetation species and related habitats. The Symposium will include: Oral presentation sessions (for papers) Poster sessions Roundtables / Workshops. The detailed programme of the Symposium will be prepared taking into account the number of accepted papers and posters and will be available by the end of September 2010. Papers and Posters: Participants may contribute with papers and posters according to the main topics of the Symposium and the following instructions. For each accepted paper, a 15-minute oral presentation will be given. A poster room will be available for accepted posters. Working Languages: The Symposium working languages will be English and French. Simultaneous translation will be available during plenary sessions. Registration: Pre-registration for the Symposium is required and can be accomplished by filling out the following form and sending it by e-mail or fax by the deadline (15 June 2010). A Preregistration notification will be sent by e-mail. The final registration procedure is to be accomplished at the Symposium before the opening session. Registration fees: A registration fee of 100 € for non-students and 50 € for students will be applied. The registration fees cover Symposium documents and proceedings, a special dinner and coffee breaks. Fellowships: A limited number of fellowships will be made available by the organisers. Eligibility criteria include: (1) the acceptance of an abstract; and either (2a) residence in a developing country or country whose economy is in transition (for non-students participants) or (2b) full-time student status.
