Sustainable management of fisheries and surveillance are priority issues identified by the management of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas within the scope of the MedPAN project. The objective of this workshop was therefore to debate this issue in the presence of several representatives of fisheries from the northern and southern Mediterranean. It was also to encourage an exchange of experiences on this theme, notably on the following points :- consensus building with fishermen (professional and amateur) and the usefulness of adaptive management ;- tools for scientific monitoring of fisheries management ;- l{\textquoteright}organisation de la surveillance et la collaboration avec les autorit\és comp\étentes ;- organisation of surveillance and cooperation with competent authorities ;- how to optimise the efficiency of surveillance ?In doing so, this collection presents the most significant extracts of the presentations, assembled in three sections :1. an overview of the sustainable management of fisheries in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas from the viewpoint of the fisherman, the manager and the expert, in both the north and south of the Mediterranean; this is illustrated with examples addressing the following themes debated in the working groups :a. consensus building with fishermen (professional and amateur) and the usefulness of adaptive management ;b. tools for scientific monitoring of fisheries management ;2. surveillance in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas, a theme developed in working groups through the following approaches :a. organisation of surveillance and cooperation with competent authorities ;b. how to optimise the efficiency of surveillance ?3. overall working conclusions from the viewpoint of the two following themes :a. the future of fisheries from the perspective of sustainable development ;b. the role of Marine Protected Areas in support of traditional small-scale fishing.
